We have covered this こと in the lessons "I'm So Experienced!" and "You Can Count on Me!"  These lessons would be good for you.

Basically, こと changes verbs into nouns.  For example, when you want to say "I can drive", there are two ways to say it in Japanese.

1. わたしはうんてんができる。

2 わたしはうんてんすることができる。

~ができる requires a noun before it, so you need a noun: うんてん.  Or, if you want to use the verb うんてんする, you need to add こと to make a noun.

~ことがある is to state your experiences.  Same as ~ができる, ~がある requires a noun before it, so you need to add こと after verbs.

Hope this helps!
