"Nihon" or "Nippon"?

I was curious about the name of the site and so I had googled what "Nihongo" meant and learned it is "Japanese." As I was looking for it though I came across "Nihon" and "Nippon" as ways of saying "Japan" in Japanese. And so I was wondering what the difference is. Because yes they both seem to mean Japan but in what instances would you be more likely to use one or the other. So I guesss I'm asking is one more formal, patriotic, casual or anything compared to the other.

Know someone who might be able to answer this question?
