Lesson もう is not for Cows!

Asked 1 year ago

Hi, i noticed, that in examples on using もう, particle は is used instead of を. Is it especially because of adverb もう? Could i translate those examples like this (for better remembering)?

もう新しいざっしは読みましたか。Did you read the new magazine already? -> Is the new magazine already read (by yourself)?

もうしゅくだいはしたの?Did you do your homework already? -> Is the homework already done (by yourself)?

However, i noticed another example:

Which particle should i use then?

Hi Jojkov san,

The adverb もう means just "already," so you can use "" for the direct object as usual.

E,g. もう新しいざっし読みましたか?

You might wonder why the examples are usuing "" istead of "を."  It's because "" can imply a contrast with other objects. It is just a nuance though.

E.g. もう新しいざっし読みましたか? --> It can imply 私は、古いざっしを読みましたが、・・・

  もうしゅくだいしましたか? --> あなたはゲームをしていますが、・・・

Anyway, you can use "" or "" with the adverb もう!

Thank you very much for explaining. I was confused and i think i already saw similar using of は before. Now it makes sence.
