I've been taking Japanese for almost a month now and a bit familiar with katakana and hiragana.. but I'm still trying to familiarise myself with the language.

Learning Japanese is pretty much the same as learning any other language!
Persistence and patience are always the keys, but if I have to point out some matters specific to learning Japanese, I would say, taking your time and asking lots of questions and talk as much as you can with words and grammars you learn and know! As Japanese language has different alphabets you need to learn (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) and three main types of talking, it is important to make sure you understand each lesson!
It is really difficult to say because everyone has their own most effective ways of learning, so I am sure you will find yours on the way!
Cheers
