Privacy Policy

The short version
- We only store personal information — like your name and email — if you give it to us directly.
- We may use cookies to enhance your experience on the site.
- We collect technical information such as browser type and location to improve our service.
- We will never sell your information to a third party.
- We use reputable third-party services to manage newsletters and ensure legal compliance.
- Our mobile apps keep your learning progress on your device; free versions show ads through Google AdMob, which you can remove with a one-time purchase.
Personal Identification Information
We may collect personal identification information from users in a variety of ways — including when users visit our site, fill out a form, or engage in connection with other activities, services, features, or resources we make available. Users may be asked for their name and email address, as appropriate. Users may visit our site anonymously. We collect personal identification information only if users voluntarily submit it. Users can always refuse to supply personally identifiable information, except that it may prevent them from engaging in certain site-related activities.
Non-Personal Identification Information
We may collect non-personal identification information about users whenever they interact with our site. Non-personal identification information may include browser name, computer type, and technical information about the means of connection to our site, such as operating system and internet service provider information.
Web Browser Cookies
Our site may use cookies to enhance user experience. A cookie is placed on the user's hard drive for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information. Users may choose to set their web browser to refuse cookies or to alert them when cookies are being sent. Note that some parts of the site may not function properly if cookies are disabled.
Mobile Applications
Our mobile apps — Nihongo Master Dictionary and Nihongo Master Kana Coach — are built to work offline. Your learning progress (lessons completed, review history, word-book stars, and similar) is stored on your device, not on our servers, and creating an account is not required to use them. The apps rely on a small number of third-party services:
- Advertising: Free versions of our apps display ads served by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers, approximate location inferred from your IP address, and ad-interaction data to serve and measure ads, as described in Google's privacy policy. Where the law requires it (for example, in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom), we ask for your consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can choose non-personalised ads instead. Every app offers a one-time "Remove Ads" purchase that disables advertising entirely.
- Analytics and crash reporting: We use Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics to understand which features are used (for example, that a lesson or quiz was completed) and to receive crash reports so we can fix problems. This information is aggregated and is not used to identify you.
- Purchases: In-app purchases are processed entirely by the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never receive or store your payment details.
- Microphone (Kana Coach): The optional speaking practice in Kana Coach uses your microphone to check your pronunciation. Audio is processed on your device — either by an on-device recognition model or by your device's built-in speech recognition service — and we never receive, store, or transmit your voice recordings. Speaking practice can be turned off at any time in the app's settings.
How We Use Collected Information
- To improve customer service: Information you provide helps us respond to customer service requests and support needs more efficiently.
- To personalise user experience: We may use aggregate information to understand how users as a group use the services and resources on our site.
- To improve our site: We may use feedback you provide to improve our products and services.
- To send periodic emails: If you opt in to our mailing list, you will receive emails including company news and updates. You may unsubscribe at any time via the unsubscribe link in each email or by contacting us.
How We Protect Your Information
We adopt appropriate data collection, storage, and processing practices and security measures to protect against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction of your personal information, username, password, transaction information, and data stored on our site.
Sharing Your Personal Information
We do not sell, trade, or rent users' personal identification information to others. We may share generic aggregated demographic information — not linked to any personal identification information — with business partners, trusted affiliates, and advertisers for the purposes outlined above. We may use third-party service providers to help us operate our business or administer activities on our behalf. We may share your information with these third parties for those limited purposes only if you have given us your permission.
